CLOSE TO... The Hoby excavations
The proud kings of the past
C
lose to Hoby that has been well protected at the bottom of Rødby Fjord, you will find one of the richest chief graves in northern Europe dating back to about the beginning of our calendar. The buried person was a middle-age man of extremely high rank. Among other things he had an almost complete, Roman drinking set with for his last journey, including two precious silver goblets. The grave is part of a big village from that time, which is being excavated at the moment. Ever since the Stone Age, every age has left its footprints in the landscape of Lolland-Falster. Explore the Bronze Age among the barrows at Godsted and continue up through the Iron Age on the embankment in Karup Vænger, which probably used to be the biggest civic castle of Denmark, or visit Eriksvolde at Erikstrup, a big medieval
castle mounds that was never finished because it was conquered by Valdemar Atterdag in the middle of the 14th century. Museum Lolland-Falster and the National Museum excavate the Iron Age village at Hoby these years. If you want to know more or to visit the excavation in the periods of excavation during summer 2013, go to www.museumlollandfalster.dk
