TIP
Visit the Fruit Festival in Sakskøbing On 14th-15th September there is a fruit festival in Sakskøbing.
The taste of festival
rom mid-summer the fields abound in juicy strawberries and potatoes. So now it is time for the local fruit growers to go to a festival - the foodstuff festival. The season starts end-June with the Biological Mother Earth festival that takes place in the most beautiful settings at the Open Air Museum in Maribo. Enjoy local steaks on the grill, taste a mutton sausage or quench your thirst with a delicious, local fruit smoothie. September means the start of the season of apples and pears. This is celebrated at the Fruit Festival at the Torvet in Sakskøbing, a week-end with lots of good, local raw materials, cooking and music. Taste your way and fill the shopping bag before you go back home.

The ship is loaded with... pear
very year, the first week-end of September the pear ships of Fejø are loaded, bound for the capital. Here they moor alongside the quay in Nyhavn and offer the passers-by a range of juicy, ripened fruit from Fejø, Femø and Askø. The tradition of the pear ships goes all the way back to the inter-war period, when it was impossible to get hold of pears in the capital. This made the hard-working fruit growers at the small islands of Lolland-Falster start business of it, and the sales were booming until the 2nd world war broke out and put an end to the traffic. More than 50 years passed until the business was taken up again. Today, however, this has become a tradition and both the departure and the arrival are celebrated as a festive day. In 2011 the pear ships increased the traffic in order that also the citizens of Nakskov could have the pleasure of a visit by the old wooden ships. Read more: www.fejoeliv.dk
