bOATING SAFETY
Know the rules
the nautical "rules of the road" are designed to avoid
accidents when two boats are meeting, crossing or one is
overtaking another. When meeting on reciprocal courses, head on,
both vessels, unless otherwise agreed by signaling, VHf radio or
other haling device, should alter their course to the starboard,
thus passing on each vessels port side.
in any situation where two boats cross there is a "give-way"
vessel and a "stand-on" vessel. each has responsibilities to avoid
collisions. When courses cross the vessel that has the other on
their starboard side is the give-way vessel and should take early
and substantial action to stay clear of the stand-on vessel. the
stand-on vessel should not alter course or speed until clear of the
situation unless the give-way vessel does not alter course. it is
then both boat operators responsibility to avoid a collision.
Get your Boat inspected
the UscG auxiliary offers free Vessel safety checks where
they inspect your boat for the presence and condition of all safety
equipment required to be on your boat. marinemax service centers
are also a great resource for getting your boat inspected.
