SLX IN THE CITY
m
arinemax Vice President of marketing Josie tucci
caught up with Kevin Koenig, Power & motoryacht
magazine's editor, at the fort lauderdale
international Boat show last fall. surveying the new sea ray
510 fly and 350 slx, showcased in-water inside an impressive
glass enclosed structure, tucci invited Hoboken-based Koenig to
the sea ray slx event at marinemax chelsea Piers in manhattan.
Under the shadow of the manhattan skyline, chelsea Piers juts
out into the Hudson river, acting as the connection point between
iconic boats (it was the intended destination of the titanic) and an
iconic city, which makes it only fitting that this historic landmark
became the location for the finest brands on land to celebrate the
finest brand on water.
taking a short ferry ride across the Hudson river, Koenig
arrived at chelsea Piers complex. after a miss-direct through the
marina, sports and entertainment complex and a casting session
for law and order: sVU, Koening found himself running into regis
Philbin on a walk along the piers. He eventually found his way
to the marinemax store where the all-new sea ray 350 slx was
being unveiled to manhattan's elite boating public.
"When i finally got to the cocktail party, i noted that
marinemax pretty much nailed the whole `glitz' thing. the sporty
slx line of sea rays were on display on the hard, while aston
martins were parked nearby." appearing next to displays of fine
wine and luxury sport cars, the 350 slx fit right in, wowing guests
as they toured the expansive and richly appointed cockpit."there
were scotch tastings and free montecristo cigars. the crowd was
speckled with the kinds of people that look like they might have
been hired out from a modeling agency," Koenig wryly observed.
"But the highlight of the party, for me, was the sea ray 350 slx."
During the event, attendees were invited to board the
350 slx to see the open deck arrangement with luxurious seating
for up to 18 people. the boat also features an electric smokeless
grill and sink in the cockpit area, a cabin and head, configurable
dining tables and a fold out aft-settee in the transom ideal for
when chilling on anchor or at the dock. Underway the standard
twin mercrusier 350 maG with Bravo iii drives gives the boat
plenty of power to please most any boating enthusiast. With
the optional twin mercruiser 8.2 maG with Bravo iii drives the
350 slx has the power to awe those onboard and observers alike.
"i think the big thing with this boat is that it's truly a great, big
dayboat," matthew Barbara, regional President for marinemax
northeast told Koenig at the event. "it's pure fun. that's one thing
people really seem to like about it. We are truly selling onboard
space. there's so much room ondeck and people love that. it
obviously sold well tonight, and we think it's going to continue to
be a big seller." the marinemax team sold two boats at the event
with more to come.
the sea ray and marinemax event attracted many of the
Wall street-types. Having worked in investment Banking in an
earlier career, Koening opined, "not many people in high finance
are hardcore boaters. But they like to have fun, and many of them
have houses `out east' in the Hamptons or down the Jersey shore.
and this boat is a great fit for that person the perfect vessel on
which to blow off a little steam after an 80-hour work week."
the slx left its mark in new york city, and now looks to do the
same across the rest of the country in 2014.
