CAPTAIN MATERIAL
Maximize your family's fun on the water by
making sure everyone on board earns their stripes.
EVERYONE IS
napping in the sun. reeling in a big catch. Grilling with friends
at sunset. circling the boat time and time again until your kid pulls
up on skis for the first time. there are so many family memories
to be made on your boat. there's nothing better than spending
the day with your entire family out on the water, as work, school,
and all the obligations of life fade out of focus along with the
shoreline.
Boating allows us to connect with our families in ways that we
just can't on shore. Part of that connection comes from everyone
enjoying themselves and having fun pitching in. Whether you're
teaching your kids to help you read the fishfinder or teaching your
spouse to captain the boat so you can have a turn waterskiing,
there's a lot of fun and sense of accomplishment to be had with a
good day on the water.
young kids can learn the basics of boating, such as proper
rope handling and how to tie basic knots. every boater old enough
to tie his own shoes can learn how to tie the cleat hitch and
the bowline. your kids may pick up the knowledge in the midst
of everyday fun, but if they need extra practice, send them to
www.animatedKnots.com or download the animated Knots app.
Whether spotting for tow sports or helping to navigate around
sandbars, teens can play an important role on the boat. and for
safety reasons, any teen or adult who regularly spends time on
board should have a basic understanding of boat physics --
stopping is different when you don't have brakes. "ninety-five
percent of women who take our classes want to learn to dock
their boats," says captain Greg riley, who teaches Women on
Water classes at marinemax lake ozark. "When i teach a four-
hour class, we spend three hours docking."
