Mount Pleasant, a 100-room, four-story building, had suffered a serious fire in Sep- tember 1923 and upon renovation became known as the "New Mount Pleasant." The name was again changed in the late 1930s to the Roosevelt (presumably to honor Pres- ident Franklin D. Roosevelt). final owner in 1968. On March 11, 1970, the northern section was destroyed in a fire, which also burned the neighboring Rideau Hotel. In January 1973, the remaining sec- tion was a victim of the "Boardwalk Fire Bug" who allegedly torched several of the downtown hotels in a winter arson spree remembered by all who lived through it. The arsonist was never caught. |
