OCEAN CITY The Cape SUP
Challenge, sponsored by the East
of Maui Shops in Dewey Beach and
Lewes Delaware, lived up to its
billing -- it was a challenge.
The 10-mile race began on St
Louis Beach in Dewey and rounded
Cape Henlopen, ran the length of
the breakwater and finished on the
beach in Lewes at Henlopen State
Park. Winds were light, the swell un-
der two feet but the tide was
screaming out of the Delaware Bay.
Paddlers who hugged the shoreline
and breakwater continued to move.
Those who read the water wrong
came to a standstill, stuck in the
current. The three-mile event, held
inside the bay in a more protected
area, had a great turnout.
Our ocean community always
comes together in support of great
causes and this event was for the
benefit of the B+ Foundation (www.-
bepositive.org), which honors the
memory of Andrew McDonough,
who passed away from leukemia at
age 14 in 2007. Please visit their
website to learn more. Kudos to the
crew of East of Maui and the pad-
dlers who took the "challenge."
This weekend, June 29-30, Pad-
dle Fenwick (www.paddlefenwick.-
com) is a two-day festival to benefit
Operation Second Chance, which is
committed to serving our wounded
combat veterans recovering in Wal-
ter Reed National Military Medical
Center and transitioning back to
civilian life. Paddle Fenwick kicks off
on Saturday, June 29, with a day of
"Everything SUP" Paddler registra-
tion and packet pickup, SUP clinics,
yoga, doggie social paddle, sprint
races and demonstrations capped
off with Happy Hour at Harpoon
Hanna's. Sponsors for this event
are Boardworks, East of Maui, Walk
on Water and Delmarva Paddle-
sports.
Race day will be Sunday, June 30,
at Holts Landing State Park in Mill-
ville, Del., featuring a five-mile course
and a 2.5-miler. Walk on Water will
provide a children's paddle clinic after
the race free of charge.
