OCEAN CITY Baltimore na-
tive Bucky Lasek had a week-
end to remember at this year's
Dew Tour Beach Champion-
ships.
On Saturday, Lasek won the
Skate Vert Dew Cup in front of
his hometown audience and
then on Sunday he took home
second place honors in the
Skate Bowl.
The crowd erupted in ap-
plause Saturday as the local leg-
end performed a near flawless
second run on the vert ramp. La-
sek's run included a drop-in to
switch 360, a nollie flip stalefish
and boneless rodeo.
Pierre-Luc Gagnon and San-
dro Dias put down technical runs
to secure the second and third
positions on the podium.
"It feels awesome to be back
on top," said Lasek. "It is pretty
special, especially with all the
love and support I get from all
my fans, my friends and local
businesses. It is great for Dew
Tour to come here and support
such a great beach community."
Earlier on Saturday, Jamie
Bestwick continued his BMX
Vert Dew Cup streak with his
ninth consecutive win. His final
run brought the crowd to its feet
and dominated the competition
with a score of 94.00. He com-
bined massive amplitude with
unique tricks, including a down-
side tailwhip flair, a knack knack
seat grab 540 and a front flip
flair that drew loud cheers from
fans and riders alike. Vince By-
ron and Steve McCann rounded
out the podium in second and
third, respectively.
"Being 41 years old, it feels
awesome to win the Dew Cup,"
said Bestwick. "I thought they
would have kicked me out of the
Dew Tour by now, just being too
old and owning all the Cups. I'm
stoked. What a contest it real-
ly went down today."
Pioneers of skateboarding
gathered at the skate bowl for
the Legends Final. Chris Miller
took top honors for the third con-
secutive year at the Dew Tour
Beach Championships. Miller's
run included a huge transfer
from the shallow to the deep
end, a frontside ollie transfer,
and a lipslide around the corner
from the deep to shallow end.
Trailing close behind Miller were
Steve Caballero and Mike Mc-
Gill, who claimed second and
third place.
"This is just such a great con-
test and so fun to skate," said
Miller. "We have been doing
these events for awhile, but not
on a national television, not in
front of an audience like the
Dew Tour, so it is a real honor."
Eight of the top street riders in
BMX met in the center of the
Dew Tour Experience for the
debut of the Battle at the Beach
Street Session. Dan Lacey top-
ped the group in the jam format
contest, landing a backward
grind to over toothpick on the
rail.
"A rail jam on the beach, you
can't argue with that," said La-
cey. "The crowd loved it, the rid-
ers loved it, and I can't wait for
next year."
On Sunday, Pedro Barros
continued his winning streak at
the Skate Bowl in Ocean City,
claiming the Dew Cup at the
Dew Tour Beach Champion-
ships for the third straight year.
His fast and aggressive skating
allowed him to boost above the
rest of competition.
Barros used his amplitude to
his advantage scoring an 89.62
with a run that included an alley-
oop indy over the hip, a huge
540 and a long Smith grind in
the deep end. Hometown hero
Bucky Lasek secured the second
place position with Kalani David
rounding out the podium in third.
"The competition was amazing,"
said Barros. "The level of talent
was super high. They had a final
with a lot of young people like my-
self, Kalani, and Tom and Bucky is
still out there killing it." Barros also
praised the beach location of the
event. "Ocean City is always a-
mazing. I really enjoy myself here.
It's a pleasure to be here and
skate this amazing bowl with ev-
eryone."
Earlier in the day, the world's
best BMX Park riders competed in
Finals in front of packed stands.
Ryan Nyquist hovered near the top
of the scoreboard before locking in
the first place win in his third and
final run. His consistent perform-
ance throughout the afternoon
peaked with a 720 and a 360 dou-
ble barspin on the box jump.
"I've done well in the past, but
this is the first time I've won the
Dew Cup in Park, so it's a big one
for me," said Nyquist. "My goal
was to get a podium spot. The fact
that it was the top spot was just
icing on the cake."
The Skate Battle at the Beach
Street Session kicked off the after-
noon with a high-energy contest in
the middle of the Dew Tour Ex-
perience. Several top street skat-
ers brought their best tricks to the
street feature set up on the sand,
but it was Jordan Hoffart who
stood out in the group to take the
overall win.
Throughout the 30-minute jam,
he landed a tailslide kickflip to
fakie on the hubba and a big spin
heelflip boardslide on the rail.
Garrett Hill was awarded the Best
Trick title for his 360 flip to 5-0 on
the hubba.
"At first I was nervous, because
I haven't been skating a lot of
stairs and rails lately, but every-
thing went super well," said Hof-
fart. "This win was a big confi-
dence boost for me. Now I'm just
gunning for the Dew Tour stop in
San Francisco. I can't wait."
