BERLIN Little League All-Star
playoff baseball is in full swing in
Berlin this week with several teams
vying for District 8 championships
and beyond, but one special group
got off to a great start on Tuesday in
its quest to advance to the biggest
prize, the Little League World Ser-
ies in Williamsport, Pa., later this
summer.
Berlin Little League All-Stars be-
gan competing in the District 8 play-
offs all over the Eastern Shore this
weekend with the hopes of continu-
ing the local program's run of un-
precedented success in recent
years. The 9-10 team opened with
an 18-4 win over Snow Hill on Mon-
day, while the 10-11 team and the
Junior League team get started with
District 8 playoffs this weekend.
One of the Berlin team's that
bears close attention this summer is
the Major League team, which is
made of a group of 12-year-olds
that have achieved remarkable suc-
cess in recent summers. Berlin's
Major League team two years ago
won the state championship as 9-
10-year-olds and repeated the feat
last year as 10-11-year-olds.
This year, the same basic team is
intact as they prepare for what could
be a run and a very special season.
The Major League team has a very
good shot at advancing through dis-
trict play, the state tournament, re-
gional tournaments and ultimately
the Little League World Series in
Williamsport in August. For genera-
tions, the Little League World Series
has always been the height of youth
baseball success, and with most of
the regional games now televised
nationally on ESPN, it remains the
goal of every young baseball player
across the country.
While there are many layers of
district pool play, district champion-
ships, state playoffs and regional
playoffs to get through before enter-
taining any ideas about a trip to Wil-
liamsport, the Berlin 12-year-olds
certainly made a statement in their
opening game of district play on
Tuesday.
In their District 8 playoff opener
on Tuesday, the Berlin 12-year-old
team demolished Princess Anne,
27-0, on the strength of six home
runs including two grand slams and
three 3-run homers. Tristan McDon-
ough had three hits including a
grand slam and a double, while Wes
Powell also hit a grand slam. Matt
Kinsey had two hits including a
three-run homer, while Jack Rosen-
berg and Hayden Snelsire also hit
three-run homers. Kevin Beck had
three hits and Billy Wheatley dou-
bled.
While being cautious of being
overly confident and getting ahead
of themselves, the Berlin All-Stars
are already reaching out to the com-
munity for potential fundraising ef-
forts as they continue their journey.
Last year, the team incurred ex-
penses of $20,000 for tournament
fees, travel expenses, lodging and
meals as they advanced to region-
als in Rhode Island.
To that end, the team is seeking
sponsorships from local businesses
and individuals in the Berlin and
Ocean City areas. Sponsors will be
recognized on a team banner that
will be posted at every game the
team plays throughout All Star sea-
son.

nie Bunting at 410-251-0201 or Vice
President Eric Snelsire at 412-977-

High School Athletic Boosters
Club's 14th annual golf tournament
last week was a huge success with
the number of participants sold out
and over $20,000 in funds raised for
the school's sports programs.
The Decatur Athletic Boosters
last Tuesday held their 14th annual
golf tournament fundraiser at Ea-
gle's Landing with a sold-out field
golfers competing.
The players enjoyed near-perfect
weather, perfect playing conditions,
excellent food and hospitality.
The Boosters this week thanked
the golfers, the sponsors, the golf
course employees and volunteers
for helping raise over $20,000,
which will be used to purchase ath-
letic equipment for any of Decatur's

WEST OCEAN CITY Three
young wrestlers from the Eastern
Shore Intensive Wrestling Club bas-
ed in West Ocean City turned in
strong performances at the Melee
Til Midnight Tournament in Virginia
with two first-place finishes and a
strong third.
The Eastern Shore Intensive
Wrestling Club, under the direction
of Coach Keith Tobin and his staff,
provides young wrestlers in the area
with training and mentoring all year
long in an effort to provide them with
a foundation for future success.
All of the ESIWC wrestlers ex-
celled at events and tournaments all
over the region last winter and
spring and most continue their train-
ing and competitions throughout the
long summer season when school
is out and other young athletes are
hitting the beach or the pool.
Another great opportunity for a
handful of ESIWC wrestlers to show
off their impressive skill and dedica-
tion came up last weekend with the
Melee Til Midnight Tournament in
Vienna, Va. The tournament is held
on 20 mats under the lights and out
in the open air on the football field at
James Madison High School. It fea-
tures some of the best youth and
high school wrestlers throughout
the mid-Atlantic region and beyond
and the local ESIWC wrestlers cer-
tainly left their mark on the event.
ESIWC wrestlers Andy McKahan
and Anthony Caruso won their re-
spective age and weight classes,
while Jagger Clapsadle finished an
impressive third.
For McKahan and Clapsadle, the
strong finishes in the Melee Til Mid-
night tournament came on the heels
of each earning All-American hon-
ors after placing high in their divi-
sions in the Eastern National Mid-
dle Atlantic Wrestling Association
Championships in Salisbury in May.

BERLIN Two Stephen Decatur
girls' varsity lacrosse standouts
have been named to the Brine Na-
tional High School All-American
team and will represent their school
at the Brine National Lacrosse Clas-
sic that gets underway this week-
end.
Decatur attackmen Cassidy
Remmell and Blair Yesko, who each
played an important role on Deca-
tur's varsity team this year that went
10-2 and earned a share of the Bay-
side Conference championship,
have each been named to the Brine
National All-American team.
Remmell, who was chosen to
play for the North Carolina team,
and Yesko, who was selected to the
Washington, D.C., area team, are
headed to the Brine National La-
crosse Classic at the Maryland Soc-
cerplex, which gets underway this
weekend.
Entering its sixth year, the Brine
National Lacrosse Classic and All-
Star Lacrosse Academy brings to-
gether some of the finest players and
coaches from all over the country for
the three-day event each summer.
The event offers players a chance to
compete against some of the top
players in the country while gaining
some exposure in front of coaches
and scouts at the next level.
Tryouts were held for high school
players at different regional loca-
tions all over the country and Yesko
was chosen to compete for the
Washington, D.C., team. She was
the only player from an Eastern
Shore high school chosen for the
team. Each team carries 20 players
and there are 14 regional teams for
a total of 280 players. The players
check in on Sunday and practices,
games, seminars and other activi-
ties are set for July 1-2.
The event culminates with re-
gional playoffs and championship
games on July 3.
