The History of
Brawley Cattle Call
=
The idea of Cattle Call was conceived by the Brawley Chamber of Commerce. The chamber
members felt that Brawley needed some type of celebration as the other cites in the Valley had. The rst
thought was a celebration honoring the cotton industry, but before the idea was put into action,
Calexico created the Cotton Carnival. It was then decided to honor the largest business in the
Imperial Valley- cattle.
A contest was held by the Brawley Chamber of Commerce to propose a name , which was won by
Mrs. Rex Hudson. She submitted the name "Cattle Call". The rst general chairman was Dick Litsworth
and the second chairman was Al Smith. It was decided to make it a community wide promotion. A
committee was formed to plan and carry out an event of this nature, Louise Willy, Ed Rutherford and
Dick Smith joined Al Smith on the Cattle Call Committee. Together, and with the help of many communi-
ty volunteers and th city, they organized the rst Cattle Call Rodeo to be held in Cattle Call Park. The idea
was immediately liked by the townspeople and the program has grown to its present size.
