Why visit the Salton Sea?
You won't experience anything else like it. It's the largest body of water in Southern California, 33-miles long and
13-miles wide. In the happier times of the Salton Sea, the 1950's and 60's, there were more people who visited
here than visited Yosemite. Why? Because of her beauty, her recreation and her incredible sunsets and sunrises.
And here she is, still beautiful and full of wonder, waiting for people to come back and kayak, sail, swim, water ski,
Para-sail, camp and visit some of the 400 species of birds that migrate here each year. Our peak season is October
to April, and our temperature hovers between 65 and 80 degrees during the day. Nice!
The Salton Sea is 54% saltier than the Paci c Ocean but has never been closed due to pollution. There are three
types of algae that bloom in our Sea and when the algae bloom, it quickly dies depleting the oxygen in the water,
which kills sh. Also the 400 million Tilapia in the Salton Sea are a tropical warm water sh from South Africa, so
when the temperature drops below 58 degrees, sh die. Tilapia is the only sh that resides here and has been able
to adapt to the salinity increase. From April through August the shing is fantastic with no limit to how many you
can catch!
Our shoreline has some sand, but is mostly overlain with millions of barnacle shells. The barnacles were brought
here in the bilge of amphibious vehicles and on the bottom of WWII Sea Planes. Here they have no predators.
The Salton Sea State Recreation Area, located on the northeast side of the sea on Hwy 111, has a Visitor Center,
Camp Store, kayak rentals, shing jetty, hiking trails, Jr. Ranger Program, Salton Sea Discovery Kids Camp, Pelican
Days Birding Festival, Wind and Water Sailing Regatta and Kite Festival, Spring Festival and over 1,000 camping
sites from full hook-ups to primitive camping. Visit us at www.seaanddesert.org or on our Facebook page at Sea
