me and had a chat on the phone
then a week later dropped me an
email to say he'd be coming over
that day to judge and visit us at the
salon! This was fantastic and I felt a
vital part of our success in winning
the award because as his visit was
unexpected he got to see the salon
in full swing...and he loved it!
We were absolutely over the moon
when we were emailed and notified
that we were finalists, it was put on
the business awards website and
twitter.
I was so nervous but didn't for a
second think I'd win! I felt so sick
when my name was called out! It
was a bit of a blur, I just remember
the girls screaming, cheering
and crying! My dad told me later
he didn't think I would win, not
because I didn't deserve to but
because he thought these types of
things always went to someone the
judges knew or someone closely
tied to the organizers; it restored
his faith in awards anyway!
We won a gorgeous glass trophy
with my name inscribed in the glass
and "Outstanding Business Person
of the Year 2012' and a bottle of
bubbly as well as lots of recognition
and a write up in all the
papers in and around
the area.
He added: "I was looking
for an individual who
was not necessarily running the
fastest-growing business, but
who had spotted an idea and was
prepared to do something about it
in the face of the recession.
"My final selection went right down
to the wire."
I think our passion and how much
we care about what we do is the
reason we won, we weren't ever
driven by money, we kept going
for our clients, because we didn't
want to let anyone down, this is
the sole reason I am where I am
today. I have trained every single
one of my staff from scratch; I've
watched them learn and grow
into fantastically skilled and caring
people and I am so proud of them,
they work so hard every day. I
started by myself and when people
kept being recommended I could
no longer do them all so I'd teach
someone else and someone else,
solely because I didn't want to turn
anyone away. I stayed late, started
early worked at 42 weeks pregnant
just to accommodate these ladies
and in return they stay loyal and
tell everyone else about their
experience...which means I never
have to advertise! The clients are so
happy for us, they were all coming
in and phoning up to see how we
did.
I don't think the award has
impacted the business greatly, its
gave us a little recognition for all
our hard work and gave the girls
something extra to be proud of, as
they love telling people we are an
award-winning salon!
I'd like to thank my family and my
partner for his patience and for
putting up with my late nights at
the salon and looking after our 3
young children.
We have never won any awards
before and have never entered
any nail competitions simply
because we are run off our feet
with clients that we always run out
of time to enter and practice! We
were however lucky enough to be
finalists in the Scratch Stars last year
as, Independent nail Salon of the
Year and Liquid and Powder tech of
the Year.
I've paid to complete an assessor
course so I'd like to do that and
possibly in the next couple of years
turn the academy into an NVQ
training center, I'd also like all the
girls to enter some competitions if
we can ever find the time as I don't
think they realize how good they
are.
