It is always important to check in
with the lifeguard about daily condi-
tions, and parents should introduce
young children to the lifeguard for
familiarity.

water temperature and the surfing
beach locations. Our lifeguards
are also well trained in delivering
beach safety seminars. So the
next time you see the lifeguard
blowing his or her whistle and
waving everyone over, please go
over and listen in.
If you do get caught in a rip cur-
rent, do not panic. Try to swim in a
direction parallel to the shoreline.
Once you feel you are out of the
current, start swimming at an
angle toward shore. If you feel you
cannot make it to shore, wave and
call for help. If you feel someone
else is stuck in a rip current,
please get help from a lifeguard. If
a lifeguard is not present, call 911.
The Ocean City Beach Patrol is
on duty every day from 10 a.m. to
5:30 p.m. beginning on the
Saturday of Memorial day week-
end. I hope that everyone has a
safe and enjoyable time in Ocean
City.
CAPTAIN'S NOTE: Although
the beach patrol will do everything
we can to keep you and your fam-
ily safe while you are in Ocean
City, the responsibility for your
family's safety begins with you.
Always check in with the lifeguard
and introduce your children to
them. Never allow anyone you
care about to go in the ocean if the
beach patrol is not on duty.
In my 41 years with the Ocean
City Beach Patrol, I have dozens
of stories of parents drowning
while attempting to save a child
they allowed to go swimming
before or after the beach patrol
was on duty. In some cases, both
the parent and the child died. If
you can only remember one safe-
ty rule, please remember "Keep
your feet in the sand, until the life-
guard is in the stand"... this can
save a life yours.
