Ward Museum To Hold Camps
BERLIN The Ocean Pines
Volunteer Fire Department (OPV-
FD) will hold the 2nd Annual Steve
Calloway Memorial Race on June
8 at the OPVFD South Station.
A 5K "Pump and Run" at 9 a.m.
will be the main event. This course
will begin and end at the fire de-
partment and wind through the
scenic wooded, waterfront trails of
the Parke community. Prior to the
race, competitors will have the
option to participate in a Bench
Press Challenge based on age
and weight. Success with the
bench press will subtract from
your race time and allow local ath-
letes to show just how tough they
are. All pre-registered runners will
receive an official event sleeve-
less shirt. Awards for top finishers
in all age groups will be present-
ed.
Aside from the race, a variety of
free family events will transpire at
the OPVFD Annual Open House.
As soon as the last runner cross-
es the finish line, the barbeque will
be underway. The kids will love
the bounce-house, games and
tours of the fire department.
Family and friends of competitors
can try their luck in a raffle filled
with great local treasures. All are
welcome to join in these post-race
activities, which will start at 10
a.m. and run till noon.
Calloway will forever be re-
membered as one of the finest
paramedic/firefighters to gear up
on the shore. Calloway was an
unmatched provider for the com-
munities he served and a teacher
that was able to inspire many of us
in emergency medicine and the
fire service. He passed away in
2010.
Proceeds from the race go di-
rectly to the "Steve Calloway Me-
morial Fund." Race bib number 1
remains retired in his honor.

OPVFD Announces Memorial Race
SNOW HILL -- The Julia A.
Purnell Museum has announced it
will be hosting a temporary exhibit
of art from the Miniature Artists of
America, which will be on display
from June 1 through July 31.
The exhibit is composed of 35
small-scale works of art primari-
ly paintings created by top min-
iature artists.
The Miniature Artists of America
(MAA) is a selective society that
was founded in 1985 and is made
up of artists who have received a-
wards in several juried exhibitions.
The group's name refers to artists
who have exhibited in the U.S.,
but includes artists from other
countries, including England, Can-
ada, South Africa and Belgium.
Miniature art is fine original art
done on a small scale. Most sub-
jects of miniature art are repre-
sented at no more than 1/6 of their
natural size, although there are
exceptions to this, such as non-
representational works. Miniature
art can trace its ancestry back to
antiquity when the Ancient Greeks
created coins and rings bearing
portraits. In the 16th through 18th
centuries, the art of creating min-
iature portraits flourished, since it
was a means of creating an af-
fordable, portable likeness in the
centuries before photography.
The MAA created a traveling ex-
hibit of members' works in order to
encourage awareness and in-terest
in miniature art. The exhibit has
been displayed throughout the Un-
ited States, including at the Smith-
sonian Institution, and has traveled
internationally as well, to locations
including Tasmania and Japan for
the Winter Olympics of 1998. Most
of the works in the traveling exhibit
are paintings, but drawing and met-
alwork are also represented. Sub-
jects include portraiture, land-
scape, still life and more.
The Purnell Museum is open
Tuesday through Saturday from 10
a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday 1-4 p.m.
Admission is $2 for adults and free
for children, courtesy of the Berlin-
Ocean City Optimist Club.
