On Montauk
The Percy Heath Arts Scholarship Award
also honors the renowned jazz bass musician,
fi sherman and fi rst MAA president.
Providing a gathering place for artists is an
important role for MAA, said Weissman.
Artists can also connect during the Montauk
Art Shows--two annual outdoor art shows
held on the Village Green and sponsored by
MAA. Both shows are season highlights for
artists and art lovers alike, said Weissman.
The fi rst outdoor art show is held Memorial
Day Weekend. The event typically includes
fi ne art ceramics, jewelry, sculpture for the
garden, photography, prints, drawings, paint-
ings and more.
The second (and original) outdoor fi ne art
show--Show On The Green-- takes place on
the third weekend in August. A fundraiser
for MAA, the juried art show is a major event
in Montauk and is nationally recognized, said
Weissman. Exhibitors are selected by profes-
sional artists, resulting in an art show that
shouldn't be missed. Presented are paintings,
drawing, mixed media works, sculpture, pho-
tography, fi ne art jewelry and more.
Both outdoor shows include local, national
and international artists. There are around 80
exhibitors in each show--the maximum num-
ber the Village Green can comfortably hold.
While fi nding sun seekers in Montauk is no
surprise, it's also a natural to fi nd artists, said
several MAA members. Artists and photog-
raphers can be frequently spotted capturing
the effects of the crisp white light on treetop
vistas, a sprawling blue ocean and other natu-
ral places, said Weissman.
Living in Montauk, especially in summer,
presents many opportunities to witness
beauty, said MAA artist Phyllis Chilling-
worth. Being able to paint outside and then
discuss the experience afterwards with fel-
low artists is a win-win-win, she said.
"Montauk is a part of my soul," said Chilling-
worth. "It's a profound place."
Of course, being in Montauk in the summer
is its own benefi t. Since it's the end (or the
beginning), everyone in Montauk is exactly
where they want to be.
"Montauk is a lot like Key West," said Weiss-
man. "No one is there that's trying to get
somewhere else. There is no place else. We
are not a drive-through community. We are
the end of the road."
Percy Heath's Depot Art Gallery and the
Montauk Artists' Association is located at
the Montauk Railroad Station at the junction
of Edgemere and Flamingo Roads, Montauk,
NY. Art exhibitions are held from Memorial
Day Weekend to Mid-October. Art openings
are held every other week on Saturday nights
from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is free.
