On Montauk
Montauk, a narrow hilly peninsula, about 11
miles long and three miles wide, lies between
Block Island Sound on the north and the Atlan-
tic Ocean on the south. Almost two-thirds of
Montauk's 13,500 acres have been set aside as
public parkland or preserve areas.
CLIMATE
Summer temperatures average in the upper
70's by day, going down to the high 60's to
low 70's by night. Prevailing winds from the
Southwest keep even the higher temperatures
comfortable. Water temperatures average in
the 70's in summer. Spring arrives late due to
the ocean's moderating effect on temperature,
which also causes fall to linger into November.
WHAT TO WEAR
Even though we are a casual town shoes and
shirts are required at most stores and restau-
rants, none require jackets and ties. Nights can
be chilly; pack a warm sweatshirt or sweater,
even in the summer.
