On Montauk
GOLF AT THE MONTAUK DOWNS
This 18-hole public golf course is open all
year, weather permitting, with a $43 fee on
weekdays, $48 on weekends (from Memorial
Day through Labor Day; out-of-state resi-
dents pay $86 on weekdays and $96 on week-
ends). Also a special twilight rate. Senior
discount available on weekdays only. Tee
times are from sunrise to sunset and there-
fore vary throughout the year. Also offering
a driving range, putting green, a pro shop,
which offers private lessons and clinics for
adults and kids, and a grill room open for
breakfast and lunch.
Register two days in advance by calling the
Tee Time Reservation system (668-1234).
7-day advanced registration only if you reg-
ister your N.Y.S. Driver's License or N.Y.S. ID
and then call (668-1234). A limited number
of walk­on spots available on a fi rst-come,
first-serve basis each morning. For those
who prefer a game of miniature golf, Puff
"N" Putt in the Village (668-4473) offers
the whole family a waterfront miniature
golf range.
HORSEBACK RIDING
At Rita's Stables, a family-operated busi-
ness for over 30 years, Rita Foster offers
trail rides for all skill levels, special 1/2 hour
rides for families and kids five and over,
pony camp and pony rides. Bring the kids to
learn to ride; she gives English and Western
lessons. Call for reservations. She will also
bring her pony to your home for a birthday
party or very special occasion or you can
have your party at her stable (668-5453.)
TENNIS
Montauk Downs State Park (668-6264)
maintains six Har­Tru courts renting for
$23 per hour, $13 for seniors. A pro shop
offers private lessons and clinics for adults
and children from mid-May through mid-
September. East Hampton Town owns courts
at two locations, one on South Erie near the
corner of Embassy in the Village and the
Montauk Racquet Club off West Lake Drive.

BICYCLING
Bring your own bike or rent one and take a
leisurely tour of Montauk where wide side
lanes make bicycling particularly enjoy-
able. The most popular ride is to the Point,
a distance of about five miles from the
Village. Along the way you can take your
bike to Camp Hero State Park where roads
curve through wooded areas passing W.W.
II buildings. Take a three mile detour to
Montauk Harbor on West Lake Drive, an
easy route with wide shoulders and no hills.
Mountain bikers can enjoy scenic rides over
thousands of acres of parkland for the best
mountain biking on Long Island. Bike trails
in Hither Woods such as Talkhouse Trail
and Serpent's Back offer several levels of dif-
fi culty. Visit the Montauk Bike Shop in the
Village (668-8975) to rent or buy trail bikes
or road bikes, for advice on the best trails and
routes, trail maps, organized rides, and other
helpful information. Espo's on Napeague
sells and rents bicycles on a weekly, daily, or
seasonal basis, and also has electric bikes.

RUNNING AND HIKING
Running and speed walking are popular
throughout the year. Over 5,000 acres of
public beaches and parkland provide ample
opportunity for long nature walks. The
Montauk Bike Shop has information on orga-
