also on East Lake Drive, is a working dock and
New York State's largest commercial fi shing
fl eet. Inlet Seafood is home to the Inlet Sea-

SURFCASTING
Surfcasters and the wetsuit crowd that swims
out to their fishing holes cast out by Camp
Hero, the Lighthouse, and west to Gin Beach
for the striped bass that run from September
through November, and big blues offshore
from July through October. Surfcasters are
a different breed of fi sherman. But the most
extreme of them are called "skishers". These
people swim out into the water with their
poles, hang on to a rock, and fi sh, Permits to
park after hours at Camp Hero Parking Lot

Lake Drive.

FRESHWATER FISHING
Bass, sunfish, perch, and walleyes inhabit
Montauk's ponds. Fort Pond is the largest and
most accessible of these ponds, but there are
others deep in the woods, like Oyster Pond
at Montauk Point State Park or Hidden Pond
in Hither Hills. Fresh water fi shing requires a
license, ask at Montauk Downs. Fishing at Big
Reed Pond in Theodore Roosevelt County Park
requires a "Green Key" card.
FISHING SUPPLIES
Star Island Yacht Club, Montauk Marine Basin
carry a large selection of fi shing supplies. Espo
has surf rods and equipment for children and
Westlake Fishing Marina also carries supplies.
SUNSET CRUISES AND PRIVATE CHARTERS
There is nothing quite as magical as a sunset
cruise in Long Island Sound. The Miss Mon-
tauk and the Elizabeth II will put you on the
water for some of this magic.
