On Montauk
MONTAUK POINT LIGHTHOUSE
MUSEUM AND GIFT SHOP
Located adjacent to the Montauk Point State
Park, the museum showcases the seafaring
history of the Lighthouse and offers guided
tours. The Montauk Historical Society owns
and operates the museum, visitor center, gift
shop, and the grounds. Climb 137 steps to the
deck for spectacular views of land and ocean.
Visit the exhibit, "Where Land Meets Sea and
Sky: Exploring Montauk History through the
Richard T. Gilmartin Galleries." Among the
displays are two historic documents related to
the original lighthouse, one signed by George
Washington and one by Thomas Jefferson.
Also displays about whaling and Montauk
Native Americans. Check for special events
and schedules throughout the year. Fee: $9
Adults, $8 Seniors, and $4 Children up to 12
years old and at least 41" tall; Children under
41" free, but they can't go up the tower. Open
daily May 6 through Columbus Day, Call for
off-season times. Group, wedding, and school
tours year round with advanced reservations.

SECOND HOUSE MUSEUM
Second House is a 1700's farmhouse and the
oldest building still standing in Montauk.
Built for the East Hampton shepherds when
uninhabited Montauk was used for grazing
cattle and sheep it is now a museum run by the
Montauk Historical Society. The land features
a beautiful rose and herb garden and the house
has exhibits of Montauk's cattle pasturing
days. Open daily in season except Wednesday
from 10am­4 pm. Fee for Adults $4. Located 1/2
mile west of the Village on Montauk Highway;
Second House hosts numerous events through-
out the year. 668-5340
SUNSET CRUISE
Take a cruise out of beautiful Montauk
Harbor. Several boats offer cruises to the
lighthouse or to Fort Pond Bay to see the
glorious Montauk sunset. Several boats offer
sunset Cruises. The Miss Montauk (668-1545),
the Ebb Tide (668-2818) and the Elizabeth II
Charters (516-817-1939) offer sunset cruises.
WHALE WATCHING TOURS
Are held aboard the 140 ft. Viking Starship
Sundays in July and August. These tours are
led by Coastal Research and Education Society
of Long Island (CRESLI) staff. Our offshore
waters have fin, minke, humpback, sei and
right whales; common white-sided dolphins,
pilot whales, and thousands of pelagic birds.
Cost is $75 for Adults and $49 for Children
under 12, Kids 4 and under free. The boat has a
full restaurant and leaves the Harbor at 9:30am
with a return at approximately 3:30pm. Reser-

SEAL WATCHING TOURS
Walking tours off Montauk Point are held on
weekends from late December through mid-
April. View these shy creatures on the rocky
shores of Montauk Point State Park. New York
State observation walks are led by a naturalist
explaining seal behavior, bird life, and coastal
ecology. Approximately three hours. Fee (sub-
ject to change): $5 Adults, $3
Children under
18, and Children under 7 years free. Take your

HITHER HILLS STATE PARK
Has weekly activities in season for adults and
children including naturalist-led walks, mov-
ies, campfi res, baseball games, and open-air
dancing. All open to the public. Non-campers
pay a $10 parking fee. 668-2554
FISHING
Go on a half-day fi shing trip, spend time on the
water and bring in some fi sh -- no experience
required, fun for the whole family, and quite
affordable. Our fi shing section on page 32 pro-
vides more information.
KID-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES
Montauk Seacology­ Captain Julie Evans
Brumm takes kids and adults out on her boat
the Daylight for fishing, eco-tours, sunset
tours and sightseeing (631-668-5070). The
Montauk Artist's Association schedules Sat-
urday morning classes for the children of the
Montauk area throughout the summer (668-
5336). The Montauk Playhouse offers Family
Fest, a series of children's programs presented
at the playhouse in the summer (668-1124).
The Montauk Library schedules free children's
events at the library. Surf Camps that teach
your child how to surf offered by Air and
Speed Surfshop and Espo's.
