l Spring 2015
Mold is found almost everywhere
and will infest any and all homes
at one point in time or another if
measures are not taken to detect
and treat current situations, and
prevent new ones from arising.
If you suspect mold in your home,
one way to be sure is to dab a lit-
tle bleach on the surface area. If it
lightens after a few moments, it
is probably mold. If you can smell
mold's distinctive odor and you are
certain the fungus is present, take
immediate precautions and treat
the area. Mildew can be a nuisance,
but other types of mold can seri-
ously harm one's immune system
and cause severe allergic reactions.
To prevent mold, reduce the
amount of moisture in your home.
Make sure bathroom fans are big
enough for the space and keep
them running for at least thirty
minutes after showers and when
cleaning the room. Thoroughly dry
floors and squeegee any water off
of walls and counters. Attics need
proper ventilation and basements
should be double-sealed. Route wa-
ter away from the foundation of
your home for overall protection.
If a leak springs in your home, take
precaution and bring in dehumid-
ifiers and carpet dryers if the area
is fabricated. Throw away se-
riously damaged carpet as op-
posed to drying and salvaging
it, as it can hold the spores of
mold for a long time and the
fungus could sprout up with-
out warning.
A clean home is the best home,
so protect your family from
mold by monitoring the humidity
levels in your home regularly, espe-
cially if you have young children or
elderly loved ones living with you.
