While there are many options for
adding a plant space to your home,
the best (and usually most reward-
ing) one is when you put your own
sweat and love into it. Do-it-your-
self greenhouses are a bit involved,
so be sure to check out ready-made
kits or hiring a team to help you as
an alternative if you're a beginner
in the construction field.
When building your own plant
space, the first and most import-
ant thing is a good foundation.
You'll need to map out the area,
dig trenches, install rebar and pour
concrete before you even start
talking plant types.
For detailed information, contact
your local supplier and give them
an idea of what you're trying to do.
They will point you in the right di-
rection regarding tools and needed
materials, and may even offer to
lend a hand for little or no cost!
Choose glass and siding wisely.
You'll want to make sure that the
pieces are secure and allow in as
much light as you need. If you live
in a warmer area, you might want
to consider a window or two that
fully open. If you're someplace
cold, make sure your pieces are
well insulated to keep frost out.
The foundation and "bones" are
the most difficult parts to accom-
plish. Once you've finished that,
your greenhouse will be complete
in a matter of weeks, depending on
how much time you spend work-
ing on it each day. Remember to
get ahold of your area's building
codes and contact a local contrac-
tor for advice. The last thing you
want to hear after finishing a proj-
ect of this magnitude is that it has
to be removed or altered according
to a rule you missed.
