Trekking at Horse Valley Ibiza Horse Valley offers rides out, starting from one hour up to a full day, and depending on the season, different kinds of rides are offered. All rides begin with guests being picked up from San Juan de Labritja. The shorter rides take visitors along the lush wilderness of the ‘rough’ part of Ibiza, where they can visit the highest point of the North of the island, or enjoy a sunset with a glass of wine. The longer rides, offered during spring, summer and autumn, take a whole day, and riders go to the beach and have the option of swimming with Manuel – who is apparently quite the water baby! The Valley also offers full day rides in combination with mountain biking, private boating/snorkelling/ scuba diving and lunch, or a trek followed by a yoga lesson, Hamman (Turkish steam bath), massage and lunch at Can Marti - an ecological agriturismo (self supporting farm that offers tourist stays) nearby in San Juan de Labritja. For more information www.ibizahorsevalley.com Currently there are nine horses living at The Valley, and they function as a proper herd, with each horse holding a specific place in the hierarchy as they would in the wild. These are the stories of some of the lucky horses who have been rescued and moved to Horse Valley to live with the herd, and David and Cosima. SEE A VIDEO INTERVIEW AT HORSE VALLEY IBIZA Continued Coco, Lucky and Mylo Coco, the alpha mare of the herd was, together with her 3-year-old daughter Lucky, saved from the butcher. David and Cosima were warned of a local man who had been breeding horses but who had run out of money and was no longer able to afford to feed them; the upshot being that he was now selling them for meat. Coco and Lucky were saved, and although unknown at the time, Coco was also in foal! The Valley was quickly acquiring residents. Lucky, a Spanish/Arabian cross, was so named due to the manner in which she came into the Valley for the first time: the young mare was chased away by Indio, the alpha male of the herd, and panicked so much that she fled straight through the wire fence and into the surrounding wilderness. David attempted to bring her back, but while both stood on a cliff, Lucky slipped and fell down, dragging David with her. A broken-off tree branch saved them both! Lucky by name, lucky by nature. Mylo, son of Coco, and brother of Lucky, is the youngest horse at The Valley, and the first to be born there. Almost one and a half years old, Mylo experiences a life free from the constant interference of people, a life without any stress, trauma or maltreatment. Those at The Valley say it is fantastic to watch a horse being brought up mainly by the herd, knowing no dangers and being protected by his fellow herd members. From a young age he joined the daily rides, galloping around gleefully and, like a child, getting stranded on places too high to jump down from! He tends to be easily distracted, perhaps looking at a little colourful wildflower for too long, before calling out to the group who refuse to continue any further until Mylo is back safely with them.
