Few tourists are aware of the horses living on the island, fewer still know about Ibiza Horse Valley. Set up 3 years ago by David Capdevielle and his childhood friend Cosima Jung - both avid horse lovers, experienced horse people, and residents of Ibiza for most of their lives - Ibiza Horse Valley arose as a direct result of David’s own experiences running commercial stables on the island. After years of managing horses stabled alone for the majority of each day, David came to the realisation that the isolation, unnatural living conditions and way in which these animals were being trained was not something he could continue to be part of. He decided to start what the locals have affectionately come to call “The Valley” - a place offering sanctuary for abused and neglected horses on the island; somewhere horses can be horses, where they can roam free and socialise in a herd environment as is so inherently natural to them. Nestled in a stunning valley 3km from the tiny picturesque village of San Juan de Labritja in the North of Ibiza, a place where life is as it was 50 years ago (just one main street, a church, two bars and a handful of shops), Ibiza Horse Valley sits amongst the lush green mountains in the natural park of Es Murta on land donated by Kate Burns - former owner of Google Europe. Once the difficult task of sourcing land for their project had been accomplished, David and Cosima began establishing The Valley. David worked for an entire year on the 70 hectare site, clearing the land and felling trees to create open spaces for the horses to rove, before building a tack room and, finally, shelters in which the horses could find refuge from the weather.
