BERLIN – The six Stephen Decatur girls’ varsity cross country runners who qualified for the state championship meet last weekend did well despite unfamiliar conditions. Decatur sent six runners from the girls’ varsity cross country team to the state championship meet at McDaniel College in western Maryland last Saturday. For years, Decatur cross country
runners have been at a competitive disadvantage during the state championships on the other side of the Chesapeake because of the terrain and this year was no different on the rolling hills of the McDaniel College course. Nonetheless, the Seahawks performed well. Alison Alvarado was the top Decatur finisher, coming in at 83rd. Chloe FauntLeroy was 112th, Katie Collins was 114th, Meya Chilengi was 135th, Alex McKahan was 141st and Katie Hofman was 149th.

BERLIN – The Lower Shore was well represented last week when the Wendy’s High School Heisman selections for Maryland were announced. Each year, Wendy’s recognizes senior student-athletes from each state celebrating their achievements both in and out of the classroom with its High School Heisman Trophy Awards. Just as the collegiate Heisman is known for being the highest award in college football, Wendy’s Heisman Award is recognized as the most esteemed award at the high school level. Eighteen public school students from across Maryland were recognized as state finalists last week including a strong representation from
the Lower Shore. Marwan Saleh from Decatur was honored as a state finalist, as were Amber Donoway and Alexander Shockley from Snow Hill. Wicomico County was also well represented with Ross Bednar from Bennett and Sydney Larkin and James Willey from Parkside. Rico Lizbinski of Montgomery High School was selected as the male state winner for Maryland for his excellence in academics, athletics and community leadership and will go on to represent the state in the national finals for the award. A total of 102 winners including two from each state will advance to the finals. Of those, 12 will be chosen as national finalists and go on to compete for the national Wendy’s High School Heisman Award on Dec. 13 with a special ceremony aired on ESPN2.
