. . General Purpose Lane Proposed For Coastal
FROM PAGE 12 mix-use lane. “With that being said, we would like to continue to pursue the option with the road diet eliminating a travel lane for wider sidewalks and making the far most right lane a mixeduse lane,” said Cimino, reporting funds are in place to complete the concept stage. Councilman Dennis Dare acknowledged concerns over losing a dedicated bus lane but as former city engineer and being involved in initiating the dedicated bus lane he had much higher expectations for that formula on Coastal Highway. “My conclusion is with a traffic light every three blocks basically and bus stops every other block the dedicated bus lane doesn’t perform much better than what it would be without it,” Dare said. “From a traffic standpoint … one of the benefits of Ocean City is you can almost park your car and go just about anywhere … but to do that if you ride a bicycle you have to deal with turning traffic and large buses, and if you want to walk you have to deal with a five-foot sidewalk, so if we are going to reduce the traffic lanes I think we have to concentrate on allowing people to move around their neighborhood either by walking on sidewalks that can accommodate larger numbers of people or bicycles.” Cimino responded, with all the access points along Coastal Highway it makes it difficult to have a dedicated bicycle lane. Dare disagreed, stating the current bus/bike lane is 14-foot wide and a dedicated bicycle lane would only need five feet, plus the storm drains were installed five feet from the sidewalk so the grates would not interfere with bicycles. Drewer’s concern with a dedicated bicycle lane is what the cyclists would do when the bus entered the lane to pick up or drop off bus passengers. “It is ok between blocks but when you get ready to pick up passengers what is going to happen at that point,” he said. Councilwoman Margaret Pillas agreed and felt cyclists would move over into the next lane of vehicular traffic to avoid buses while stopped. “It is a disaster mixing this all together,” she said. “You are trying to put 10 pounds in a five-pound bucket. It becomes too much and unsafe.” Dare made a motion to endorse the road diet and ask the SHA to continue working with its transportations engineers to investigate and study the concept of a general purpose lane on Coastal Hwy. south of Route 90. The council voted 6-1 with Pillas opposed. “We all have some concerns both ways and the only way to address those concerns is to continue to study it,” he said.
