SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team cruised past county rival Snow Hill, 42-7, last Friday for its fifth win a row and clinched a berth in the state Class 3ASouth playoffs. The Seahawks wasted little time dispensing with the Eagles and finished with a 7-3 record. Decatur opened the season with its first-ever win over Indian River, 30-28, but then stumbled somewhat during the early part of the season. The Seahawks fell to Queen Anne’s in the second game but rebounded with a 12-7 win over Cambridge-South Dorchester. Decatur was routed by Kent Island, 42-8, in week four, followed by a tough 28-14 loss to Easton on Homecoming. After that loss, however, the Seahawks went on a big roll, winning their last five games to finish the regular season at 7-3. During the stretch, Decatur beat North Caroline, Wicomico, Bennett, Parkside and finally Snow Hill last Friday. During the stretch, Decatur outscored its opponents by a combined 165-67, with 24 of those points given up against Parkside two weeks ago. With the 7-3 record, Decatur earned the number-three seed in the 3A-South tournament and will hit the road for a semifinal game against Lackey in Charles County tonight. Lackey finished the regular season with an 8-2 record including a perfect 5-0 at home. On paper, the game appears to be an even match with Decatur averaging 24.3 points per game and Lackey averaging 25 points per game. Defending 3ASouth champ Huntingtown is the top seed in the region and will host fourth-seeded Westlake tonight. Worcester Prep last week handed out its sports awards to standout female athletes on its fall teams. Submitted Photos Worcester Prep Honors Fall Athletes By SHAWN J. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Worcester Prep honored its fall sports season standouts last week with a special awards ceremony. Players from all of the Mallards’ fall sports teams were recognized for their accomplishments during the 2013 season. For the boys’ varsity soccer team, Ryan Nally was named Most Valuable Player, while Sam Deeley was recognized with the Coach’s Award and J.B. Loomis was named Most Improved. On the varsity golf team, Billy Brittingham was named MVP, Jason Cook was honored with the Coach’s Award and Jon Ruddo was named Most Improved. From the Mallards’ girls’ varsity soccer team, Alissa Talbert was named MVP, Lilly DiNardo was honored with the Coach’s Award and Julia D’Antonio was named Most Improved. Cecily Sass was named MVP of the varsity volleyball team, McKenna Shanahan won the Coach’s Award and Karlie Southcomb was named Most Improved. From the conference champion girls’ varsity field hockey team, Meg Lingo was named MVP, Jordie Loomis was honored with the Coach’s Award and Libby Truitt was named Most Improved. OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Recreation and Parks Fall Flag Football League playoffs got underway last week and are working toward a championship next week. In the opening round, the Eastside Mafia blanked the BACKers, 22-0, while Seaquest beat Johnny’s Pizza, 19-0. Seaquest then knocked off Eastside Mafia, 33-24, to advance. On the other side of the bracket, the Bull Assassins beat the FOP, 36-6, in the opening round, while Kirby’s Red Onion edged Delmar, 8-6, in a low-scoring game. The Bull Assassins then beat Kirby’s Red Onion, 33-24, to advance on the winner’s bracket. In the loser’s bracket, Johnny’s Pizza shut out the BACKers, 30-0, to advance and will face Kirby’s Red Onion with a chance to move on. Delmar eliminated the FOP to advance with a shot at getting back in the winner’s bracket. Meanwhile, the up-to-date individual statistics were released this week. Charlie McCaffrey leads the league in touchdowns thrown with 39, followed by Ray Taranto with 27 and Ryan Gartland with 25. Dennis Eade, Greg Lasinski and Todd Murphy are all tied for the lead in rushing touchdowns with three, with Taranto, Gartland and Zak Keenan tied for second with two each. Brandon Ball leads the league in receiving touchdowns with 12, while Tyler Boyle, Kyle Swayngim and Mac Williams are tied for second with eight apiece. Patrick Spicer leads the league in kicking points with 45, followed by Adam Rones with 37, Jeremy Stewart with 25 and John “Doc” Maniatty with 16. On the defensive side of the stat sheet, Jay Manuel leads the league in quarterback sacks with 18, followed by D.J. Johnson with 14 and Chip Cuffee with nine. Brandon Ball and Vince Stewart are tied for the lead in interceptions with five each, followed by Jose Flores with four. Four players are tied for third with three. Mac Williams leads the league in defensive touchdowns with three.
