SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team picked up a big win last week, beating Bayside North power North Caroline, 20-6, on a dreary, wind and rain-swept field at home on Friday. The Seahawks faced unbeaten North Caroline at home on Friday hoping to shake off a disheartening loss to Easton on homecoming the week before. With a stout defense that forced the Bulldogs to turn the ball over on downs several times in the first half, along with a timely offense, Decatur got out to an early lead and hung on late for the big 20-6 win to even its season record to 3-3. It has been a see-saw season for the Seahawks, who beat Indian River for the first time ever in its season opener, but failed to string together back-to-back wins all season. Decatur put it all together with the big win over North Caroline on Friday. The Seahawks went on an 11play, 73-yard drive capped off by a three-yard touchdown pass from Justin Meekins to Trip Ortega with 3:42 remaining in the first quarter. Austin Dundore’s extra point put Decatur ahead 7-0 early. The Decatur defense held North Caroline in check through much of the first half as the Bulldogs were reluctant to punt in the sloppy weather and turned the ball over on downs multiple times. North Caroline finally broke through with a touchdown with just 46 seconds remaining in the second quarter to pull closer at 7-6, but the extra point attempt was blocked and the Seahawks took a one-point lead into halftime. Decatur made it 13-6 early in the third quarter on a five-yard touchdown run by P.J. Copes. Trailing late in the fourth quarter, North Caroline was forced to go the air in attempt to tie the game or go ahead. With time running down, Decatur’s Andrew Borradaile picked off a Bulldog pass with just 37 seconds remaining and dashed 36 yards for a touchdown to seal the victory for the Seahawks by a score of 20-6. Copes rushed for 89 yards on 24 carries, while Meekins accumulated 65 yards on the ground on seven carries. Borradaile rushed for 37 yards on six carries. Meekins went 4-5 through the air for 49 yards. Borradaile had three catches for 46 yards. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s unbeaten boys’ varsity soccer team scored a major win at home on Wednesday, beating also unbeaten Bennett, 1-0, on a late second half goal to take command of the Bayside South standings. Something had to give with both teams entering the rare mid-afternoon contest without a loss in the Bayside South, and for about 35 minutes, no team had gained an edge in the hard fought, physical contest in front of a loud, bipartisan crowd at Seahawk Stadium. The Seahawks entered the game with a 8-2 record overall including a perfect 7-0 mark in the Bayside South. The Clippers came in at 7-0-2 overall including a 5-0-1 conference record. Neither team scored in the first half during which both had opportunities. In the second half, the physical battle continued on both ends of the field, and perhaps more importantly in the middle, where the 50-50 balls were won and lost by both teams. With about nine minutes remaining, Bennett got a great opportunity with an indirect penalty kick from just outside the box on the left side, but Decatur keeper Logan Thumma made an outstanding save to keep the game scoreless. With just under six minutes left, Decatur’s Alton Walker took a pass in the middle of the field, made a nice move past the last Bennett defender as the ball hung briefly in the air and then fired a low shot passed the Bennett keeper to put the Seahawks ahead 1-0. The goal touched off a wild celebration on the field, the bench and in the stands, but there was still a lot of time left and Bennett would not go quietly. Thumma came up big down the stretch, making save after save as Bennett frantically tried to tie the game. The Clippers made one last big push with under a minute left and a Bennett forward got a great look at the goal, but Thumma made one more diving stop to seal the 1-0 win. Wednesday’s big win came just two days after Decatur narrowly beat Wicomico on Monday on the road to keep its unbeaten conference record unblemished. Nick White led the Seahawks in that contest with two goals, while Zach Elmer and David Bernal-Clark added single tallies. This week’s Atlantic Physical Therapy “Tough Guy of the Week” award went to Andrew Borradaile for his strong play in a big win over North Caroline. Borradaile intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown to seal the win. Pictured above is APT representatives Matthew and Bobby Hammond with Borradaile and Head Coach Bob Knox.
