OCEAN PINES Members of
Worcester County's Tea Party (WC-
TP) got a chance to meet Charles
Lollar, a potential candidate for gov-
ernor of Maryland in 2014, last
month.
During the meeting, Lollar high-
lighted his conservative beliefs on
subjects like family and education
and asked the WCTP to
approach the 2014 election
with optimism, as he is
confident that Maryland
could soon become a red
state.
Introduced as an "unan-
nounced gubernatorial can-
didate for the state of
Maryland," Lollar's back-
ground includes working in
private industry, serving in
the United States Marine
Corps, serving as chair of political
action committee New Day Mary-
land, and an unsuccessful run for
Maryland's 5th congressional district
in 2010, where he did manage to
capture the Republican primary
nomination with 64 percent of the
vote.
Lollar presented a simple plat-
form to the WCTP. In his opinion,
the foundation of society starts at
home and "broken families," as he
called them, need to be addressed.
"Strong families create strong
communities. Strong communities
create strong cities," said Lollar.
"Strong cities create strong states.
Strong states, with states' rights,
create a strong nation."
It's not a problem that can be
solved overnight, Lollar furthered.
"You can't buy your way out of
fixing the problem of broken fami-
lies. You can't spend enough mon-
ey. You can't tax people enough
when the problem deals with broken
families," he claimed.
Problems in the home
extend into education, ac-
cording to Lollar. It's a
problem that he believes
all sides of the political
aisle will notice eventually
and one he was adamant
can't be fixed with tax or
budget increases.
"But finally, across the
board, democrats, republi-
cans, independents are
starting to see that you can't spend
enough money to fix schools. At
some point, we have to address the
issue of the family," he said.
On the topic of education, Lollar
also spoke briefly about the ongoing
national implementation of the
Common Core Curriculum (CCC).
Common Core will be a federally
mandated set of minimum stan-
dards, a "core" education policy,
that all states are expected to adopt.
