SALISBURY ­ Four local students
have each been awarded a $5,000
scholarship from the Arthur W. Per-
due Foundation, the charitable giving
arm of Perdue Farms.
Overall, 15 scholarships were a-
warded this year to children of Per-
due employees and independent
contract farm partners. Winners were
selected based on academic a-
chievement, extracurricular activities
and community involvement.
·Katherine E. Burkett, daughter of
Jeffrey and Barbara Burkett of Salis-
bury, whose mother
is an associate at
Perdue's corporate
headquarters in Sal-
isbury, will attend
Meredith College,
where she plans to
study education as
she pursues her de-
sire to become a
teacher.
During her tenure at Parkside
High School, Burkett completed a rig-
orous course load en route to earning
a weighted 4.47 grade point average.
·Rachel K. Gattoni, daughter of
Lisa Gattoni of Salisbury and Ronald
Gattoni of Herndon, Va., whose
mother is an associ-
ate at Perdue's cor-
porate headquarters
in Salisbury, plans to
attend Radford Uni-
versity, where she
will study dance.
During her tenure
at James M. Bennett
High School in Sal-
isbury, she earned a
weighted 4.375 grade point average
and was named a National Merit
Commended Scholar and an AP
Scholar with Honors.
·Emily L. Jarrett, daughter of Cy-
rus and Lynne Jarrett of Salisbury,
whose father is an associate at
Perdue's corporate headquarters in
Salisbury, plans to study both dance
and forensic anthro-
pology at Mercy-
hurst University.
During her tenure
at Salisbury Chris-
tian School, Jarrett
completed a rigor-
ous course load that
included honors and
Advanced Place-
ment classes and
dual enrollment at Wor-Wic Com-
munity College. She graduated in
June as class valedictorian.
·Katherine E. Perry, daughter of
William and Susan Perry of Salis-
bury, whose father is an associate at
Perdue's corporate headquarters in
Salisbury, will attend
West Virginia Uni-
versity to study
speech pathology.
Perry completed a
rigorous course load
during her tenure at
James M. Bennett
High School, taking a
full schedule of hon-
ors and Advanced
Placement classes en route to earn-
ing a weighted 4.416 grade point
average.
