Middle division
For children grade 5 through 8
Designed specifically to meet the needs of middle
schoolers, the daily program will offer a diverse
selection of activities, arts, academics and experiences.
Campers explore science, arts and crafts, math,
environmental education, computer keyboarding and
software, and geocaching each week. Time will be
provided for supervised reading, allowing students
to get ahead on their summer reading assignments
or simply enjoy a good book of their choosing. The
camp also offers instruction and supervised play in
three core sports: soccer, tennis, and basketball. In
addition, campers will participate in other organized
team play and games. Tuesdays and Thursdays will
be opportunities for off-campus experiences. Middle
school campers join the other Hawks Haven campers
on field trips when appropriate. Often, the students
journey out on their own for experiences more suited to
their age and interests. Last summer, they took a tour
of Ruud Lighting, Twin Disc and visited the Civil War
Museum in Kenosha. What will 2013 hold in store?
Campers will be grouped by age when appropriate, in
multi-aged activities at other times. Camp groups will
have the chance to build lasting bonds and friendships
through exploration, activity, and fun. This allows
campers to not only explore the world around them
with their peers, but also spend time serving as role
models to our younger campers.
A typical week includes:
BIG MONDAY
Middle school campers will have an enrichment
experience in math and/or geography. The morning
may include learning about different places fellow
campers have visited or playing number and logic
games. The afternoon will include basketball
instruction, team sports, and outdoor free play.
TERRIFIC TUESDAY
Tuesday is one of our field trip days, experiencing
the wonders that exist right here in our backyard.
Students will start their day outdoors, whether learning
about Prairie's Giving Garden, learning the basics of
composting, trying their hand at bass fishing, or simply
going on a nature hike.
WORLDLY WEDNESDAY
Each Wednesday, middle school campers will explore
the arts and science in the morning. Our hands-on
science activities are always a highlight of the summer.
This year, each weekly science activity will connect to a
featured scientist. Wednesday afternoons offer soccer
instruction, team sports, and outdoor free play.
THRILLING THURSDAY
The day begins with time outdoors exploring our
relationship with, impact on, and stewardship of the
environment. Then, it's off to fun and thrills for our
afternoon field trip.
FUN FRIDAY
Morning will be spent with computers and geocaching,
creating a song on Garage Band, or learning to use
global positioning satellite coordinates to find hidden
treasures. Afternoons include tennis instruction, team
sports, and outdoor free play. There may also be
off-campus geocaching on select Friday afternoons.
