ALEX MASTERS AS A KID, Alex Masters remembers he used to “run from cameras.” Today, he’s a professional photographer travelling the globe to shoot major sports events, fashion shows and celebrities. The 24-year-old Bermudian attended Saltus from Cavendish to Upper Primary 6, before moving for several years to England. A self-taught photographer, he has a studio in his parents’ Pitts Bay Road home and splits his time between Bermuda (where he photographs weddings and other special events) and assignments overseas as varied as New York Fashion Week and the Olympics. Notably, Masters is regarded as one of the best field-hockey photographers in the world; his foreign clients include the International Hockey Federation, the Pan American Hockey Federation, and the US Field Hockey Association. What does he like best about his work? “Being someone,” laughs Masters, who first took up photography because he simply found himself “thinking about it too much. “Growing up, I was never part of the ‘in’ crowd,” he muses. “I wasn’t athletic, overly intelligent or popular. I can’t ever remember going to a house party, or being invited to one, for that matter. I didn’t stand out and never really accomplished anything. Four years on, I have work in coffee-table books, magazines, websites and in windows!” Despite his globe-trotting, Bermuda is a much-loved home base. “In no other place could I have my finger in as many pies, or have as much opportunity available to me,” Masters admits. “I’m now in a position where I’m invited on all-expenses-paid trips to weird and wonderful places around the world, and if there's anything I want to do—it’s really just a matter of asking.” His signature photo style: “Clean and minimalist with a borderline surreal ‘pop.’” Favourite subjects: “I’m a people-watcher. I like to study them, get a feel for how they move. How they express themselves. As long as I can do that, I’m in my element.” 30 SALTUS-TO-SALTUS RUN Some 276 participants of all ages turned out for our campus-to-campus 4K run and walk, including Headmaster Staunton (No. 1), staff, parents and kids S A LT U S M A G A Z I N E
