Live Free was formed after the
murder of our dear friend, Jason
Smith ('07), in May 2011 in what
police believe was a case of
mistaken identity. Jason had no
gang affiliations, but was unfortu-
nately in the wrong place at the
wrong time. Our group is made up
of some of Jason's closest friends,
and we created it not just as his
friends, but as his family.
We know that "Live Free" will
have a personal meaning to each
individual; however, our aim is to
encourage and promote together-
ness. The purpose of our events is
to raise money to sponsor both
local charities and fund a
scholarship award at Saltus
(given annually to a SGY
graduate). Our mission is to
promote positive social envi-
ronments and build commu-
nity and family
relationships. With money
raised from fundraising
events, Live Free has been able
to donate just over $500 to Big
Brothers and Big Sisters, as well
as award two scholarships to
graduating Saltus students--
Daniel Andrade ('11) and
Ian Simmons ('12).
Jason, a Bermuda Regiment
lance corporal, had a passion for
football. He was the striker for the
Pembroke Hamilton Club and
represented and travelled with
the national squad. He was an avid
team player both on and off the
field. In memory of him, Live Free
organised a seven-a-side football
tournament this past June, with the
finals played during a Family Fun
Day on the Saltus Field. More than
160 players participated. Many
alumni and Saltus graduates of
2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011
and 2012 participated in the event.
We also had tons of help and
support from Saltus Facilities staff,
Mr. Beard, Mr. Figureido, Mr. Lewis,
Ms. Robinson, as well as past and
present Saltus students, including
SGY2 students.
All these individuals and many
others within the community worked
together to make these events
successful. The tournament
encompassed the whole purpose
for which Live Free was created:
to honour Jason's memory, cele-
brate his life, and ensure his
legacy lives on.
