Training to be a Social Worker `on-island'
The Health and Social Services Department (HSSD) currently sponsor some
employees to undertake the Open University social work degree
programme. Candidates will usually have been working for the HSSD for a
number of years in relevant social care roles and will have the academic ability to study at degree
level.
The Open University social work degree programme is modular, being made up of two modules of
study for each year of the three-year full-time course.
The Open University now allows open access to
all modules on their social work degree
programme, meaning local students are able
to study the degree without being employed
by a sponsoring agency. This may mean that
the HSSD will be able to support more local
social work students in the future by providing
practice learning opportunities to people who
are studying independently.
Financial support for independent students studying Open University degrees may also be available
from the Department of Education.
