Among the rolling hills and winding roads of this Central
Texas rural area, you'll find interesting springtime
activities and a fun and friendly atmosphere like no other
location in Texas.
Brenham, the largest town in Washington County, is
located about 90 minutes west of Houston on Hwy. 290
and about 40 minutes south of Bryan/College Station. It
is the home of Blue Bell ice cream, an historic Main Street
district, and historic homes and churches.
The tiny village of Independence, just 10 miles north of
Brenham, boasts the noted Antique Rose Emporium, where
you can enjoy strolling through winding garden paths and
purchasing roses of all descriptions. It is also the home
of Texas Baptist Historical Center/Museum and church.
Nearby, the Old Baylor Parks commemorate the site where
Baylor University was founded in 1845.
Burton, eight miles west of Brenham,
features the Official Cotton Gin
Museum of Texas, along with a
restored home and cobbler's shop,
and other historic buildings.
Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is situated
on the meandering Brazos River northeast of Brenham.
A replica of Independence Hall marks the 1836 site
where 59 hardy frontiersmen drafted the Constitution
to establish the Republic of Texas, freeing the area
from Mexico. The complex features an 1850 farm home
complete with costumed interpreters, Star of the Republic
Museum with its award-winning focus on the Republic
period of 1836-1846, and a beautiful Visitor Center.
Down the road, Chappell Hill's Main Street is lined with
historic homes and businesses, the oldest continually
operating bank in America and a museum with rotating
gallery exhibits. Chappell Hill is also home of the Official
Bluebonnet Festival of Texas. This free-to-the-public event
features more than 250 juried arts and crafts booths, food
court, live music and children's activity court.
Three area wineries offer tastings and tours,
host frequent special activities
throughout the year and
grape stomping events
from mid-July mid-
August.
