The historical Millican schoolhouse remained in disrepair,
before a group of citizens intervened. In 2005, enthusiastic
citizens teamed up to restore the building, which was
originally built in 1880. The community raised enough
donations to help with basic renovations. The space now
functions as the Millican Community Center, and has an
air conditioning system, indoor plumbing, a commercial
kitchen, and other modern amenities.
Several groups helped facilitate the restoration including
the Millican Women's Club, Millican Heritage Society,
and relatives of former students.
"There is a tremendous amount of grit and determination
in these hale and hardy folks of Millican, and there is
even more pride in their history," says Fran Lamb, Chair
of this year's event.
On April 27th, citizens of the Brazos Valley are invited to
support the cause by attending a tea party intended to raise
money for remaining projects. The Hankie Pankie Tea is
offered at two dining times for guests, 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Tickets are $20 and include a three-course tea. This year's tea
is dedicated to Viola Barker, a long-time Millican resident
and faithful tea supporter who passed away earlier this year.
During the event, Fran Lamb, host of the KAMU radio show
"Heritage Highlights," presents a history of the handkerchief,
as this year's theme incorporates vintage hankies. "We're
digging our grandmothers' handkerchiefs out of the attic...
getting ready to go to town," Fran shares.
