Sam Houston State University's
College of Fine Arts and Mass
Communication is home to talented
art students and a fervid, passionate
faculty. Dr. Cindy Gratz is a pivotal
inspiration within the College. As a
professor at SHSU with more than
22 years of experience, Gratz helped
build the nationally-ranked dance
program and developed countless,
talented individuals into world-class
dancers. This April, in a bittersweet
performance, she bids farewell.
A Celebrated Life
After earning her doctorate at NYU,
Cindy travelled to SHSU, because she
wanted to be closer to her Texas "roots."
A self-proclaimed "whippersnapper,"
she was hired for the position. She
inspired students with her diverse
talents in choreography, dance history
and world dance. In 2010, she
received the Dance Teacher Award for
Higher Education from Dance Pointe
Magazine.
For Cindy, warm memories abound.
She remembers the "glory days" with
her colleague, Professor Dana Nicolay,
as well as the unforgettable Alumni
Dance ARC Concert where she was
honored and given a silver plumeria.
This year, at the Dance Spectrum
Concert on April 24-27, Cindy shares
one more farewell hula dance. The
event is scheduled for 8 p.m., with
a matinee on Saturday at 2 p.m. in
the Dance Theatre at the Gaertner
Performing Arts Center.
"I want to say farewell to those whom
I have met, taught, worked, danced,
laughed and cried with...I want to say
farewell in the language that we all
share by dancing," Gratz said.
