Several Stephen Decatur High School classes and clubs joined forces to support the troops with monetary donations nearing $500 and other donations that included clothing, food and toiletries. Students also made appreciation cards with inspirational messages. The campaign, led by junior Katie Bear, culminated with a presentation to the American Legion Synepuxent Post 166 on Veterans Day. Above, American Legion Rider Director Ed Hansen (far left) and Adjutant Sarge Garlitz (second from left) joined teachers Laurie Chetelat, Mary Malone, Nikki Zervakos, Nora Duke, Principal Tom Zimmer and many of the Stephen Decatur High School students who provided donations to the troops on Veterans Day. The American Legion Synepuxent Post 166 will be making care packages out of the donations and shipping them. Ocean City Elementary School recently held Red Ribbon Week activities. One activity the student body participated in was the "OCES Jump Wave." During the Jump Wave, all students did one minute of continuous jumping jacks simultaneously followed by a heart-rate check. Students have been learning how to monitor their heart-rate during exercise while in physical education classes. Submitted Photos
Worcester Preparatory School seniors Megan Kuczma, left, and Chase Schmehling created tributes to United States veterans by creating two bulletin boards featuring relatives of WPS students who served in the armed services. Kuczma and Schmehling began with one bulletin board but soon realized that they had more information than would fit on the board. Third-grade gardeners from Showell Elementary helped with the beautification of school grounds by planting new bushes during the Garden Club After School Academy class.
The Stephen Decatur High School After School Academy Spanish Club created and painted authentic piñatas made from balloons and paper mache. The club will be donating the pinatas to Friends Forever Learning Center to spread cultural awareness. Stephen Decatur High School Future Educators of America members Kiley Cooke, Katie VanBruggen and Taylor Black served as greeters during American Education Week, Nov. 18-22. In addition to opening its classrooms and hallways to over 100 parents and community members throughout the week, SDHS hosted several events including the annual school competition of Poetry Out Loud and the annual food drive.
