FROM PAGE 58 The award recipient for November is Patrice Aversa, RN, a nurse in the Same Day Surgery Department. The nomination, written by a colleague, described how she provided excellent care not just to her patients, but to families too. When an elderly patient passed away, Aversa, who had been keeping the PATRICE family apprised of the AVERSA patient’s progress by phone, greeted them in person. “Patrice took the husband and son to see their wife and mother, explained to them very caringly what to expect and stayed with them both during this very difficult time. The husband and son were extremely grateful for the time and energy that Patrice had taken with them under very sad conditions. She made them feel special and made sure that all their questions and concerns were answered. Patrice went out of her way to make sure that the husband and son were well cared for and made their final visit with their mother/wife a special one that they will remember,” the nominator wrote. Extraordinary compassion and clinical skill, like that demonstrated by Aversa, are what the DAISY Award is intended to honor. Every month, a nurse will be selected by Peninsula Regional's nursing administration to receive the DAISY Award.

University Recognized
SALISBURY – U.S. News & World Report has named Salisbury University one of the nation’s Best Colleges for Veterans. The inaugural ranking was created to help veterans and active service members pursue a college education by providing information about campuses that offer benefits. Only 234 campuses were ranked; SU was No. 23 among Regional Colleges in the North. “From a growing Student Military and Veterans Association to friendly staff and faculty members who assist with veterans’ affairs, SU is committed to providing a supportive educational environment for those who have served, or are currently serving, our country,” said Dr. Diane Allen, SU provost and senior vice president of academic affairs. All of the ranked campuses are certified for the G.I. Bill and participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program to help veterans reduce education costs. They also are members of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Consortium, a group that advocates for simplifying credit transfers and giving veterans credit for military training and national tests. At SU, nearly 200 students use U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs educational benefits annually. Staff, including a veterans’ affairs liaison in SU’s Registrar’s Office, help students navigate the processes.
