BERLIN – Senior standout Andrew Borradaile last week was awarded the Stephen Decatur High School varsity football team’s “Tough Guy of the Year” award during an awards ceremony at Seacrets. Most of the accolades in football at any level are reserved for the glamour guys, the golden-armed quarterbacks and fleet-footed running backs who put points on the board and thrill the crowd, but the weekly “Tough Guy” award is handed out to the Decatur player who best exemplifies the spirit of Seahawk football. Started 10 years ago by Atlantic Physical Therapy CEO Bob Ham-
mond, the weekly APT “Tough Guy of the Week” award acknowledges the efforts of an individual player, or on some occasions a unit on the team, that do the little things to help the team win that don’t necessarily show up in the box score. Week in and week out during the season, the APT “Tough Guy” award recognized those players, who are rewarded with a handsome trophy each week. At the end of the season, a “Tough Guy of the Year” award is presented to the player who best exemplified those qualities throughout the year. Last week, Borradaile, who was a multiple winner of the weekly “tough guy” awards through his sophomore, junior and senior seasons, was named “Tough Guy of the Year” for 2013.
BERLIN – The 6th Annual Reindeer Run 5K, sponsored by Live Long Fitness, is set to return on Dec. 7 with an early morning start time through downtown Berlin. The annual race, which has become a fixture on the local holiday schedule since its inception five years ago, starts and finishes at the Atlantic Hotel with the course winding its way through the heart of the downtown area. The course heads down Main Street around the Worcester Prep campus and the Northern Worcester County Athletic Complex before finishing back in
front of the hotel on Main Street. With the town decorated, the event is a perfect kick-off to the holiday season. The event is very family-friendly with food, drinks, a bake sale, carriage rides beginning at 11 a.m. and even Santa. Fundraising has been set up for Worcester Youth and Family Counseling Services. The 5K start time is 9 a.m. with a one-mile fun run set to start at 10 a.m. Last year’s race was the largest ever with 322 competitors. For the second year in a row, Berlin’s own Dave Rovansek was the top overall finisher, while Lindsay Buckman was the top female finisher for the second year in a row.
