OCEAN CITY – The American Cancer Society (ACS) is celebrating two big milestones this year nationally and locally. The organization is marking its 100th year of existence in 2013 while in Ocean City the Holiday Wrappings Fashion Show and Luncheon turns 25 years old next month. Featuring raffles, auctions, food and fashion, Holiday Wrappings has grown extensively over the last two and a half decades. “It’s a very large, nice, wintertime event,” said Holiday Wrappings Chair Dawne Pappas. “There was
one year where we were over 1,000 people but that was years and years ago and a little hard to manage. But our numbers are usually around the 500 mark.” Holiday Wrappings will showcase 14 local fashion retailers from the regional area, including locally owned outlets in Salisbury, Ocean City, Rehoboth and more. “They’re all independent stores,” said Pappas. “We’re trying to keep the money local and support local businesses.” The fashion show will highlight looks for children, teens and adults. Tickets are $40 each with lunch provided by Center Plate at the Ocean City Convention Center. There will

be a dance performance and “a few surprises” during the event as well, according to Pappas. “Then at 1 p.m. the fun starts with the models and we’re also highlighting a video of the progress of American Cancer Society over the last 100 years,” she said. In the past, Holiday Wrappings has raised an average of about $40,000, a goal that ACS hopes to hit again this year. The money raised is funneled into a variety of cancer awareness and treatment programs. “The money raised from this event is for all types of cancer … The money raised does support local programs,” Pappas said. “It supports advocacy, education and research.” ACS is responsible for a host of counseling and advocacy programs like Road to Recovery, Reach to Recovery and Look Better/Feel Better, among many others. Wrappings also benefits cancer research, with ACS providing funding for 46 Noble Prize winners as of 2011. Holidays Wrappings will be hosted at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center in Ocean City on Tuesday, Dec. 10. Guests are asked to RSVP by Dec. 2 by mail, online at www.acsholidaywrappings.org or at the Convention Center Box Office.
