Martin O’Malley last month honored long-time Assateague Island State Park employee Clarence Bowen for his 28 years of service without ever missing a day of work. O’Malley recognized Bowen for his nearly three decades of service to Assateague State Park and the citizens of Maryland. Bowen, 70, has never missed a day of work in his 28-year career with the state park. “On behalf of Maryland, I want to thank Clarence for his unwavering dedication, even in trying times, to Assateague State Park and those who enjoy it,” said O’Malley. “He is a true inspiration.” Bowen leads a crew of 10 workers who maintain the bathhouses at the park, keeping them clean, stocked and ready for guests. He works seasonally at the state park, including weekends, from April through October. Two years ago, Bowen was diagnosed with prostate cancer and continued to work through the treatments. “Clarence would arrive early to work and get started, leave for an hour for treatment and then return to finish his workday at the park,” said Assateague State Park maintenance chief Allen Jones. Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Joe Gill and Maryland Park Service Superintendent Nita Settina and state park staff along with Bowen’s family and friends took part in the celebration. “His dedication to the park and its patrons is incredible,” said Settina. “He’s incredible.” LIVE ENTERTAINMENT ON THE FIRST MATES DOCK BAR OPEN DAILY AT 11:30 A.M.
