Around 10 a.m. on Thursday, a vehicle traveling eastbound on Route 50 near Sam Bowen Boulevard near the Wal-Mart and Home Depot shopping complex and across from the Glen Riddle community left the roadway, traveled across a field and crashed into a ditch. The unidentified driver, confirmed only as a local man around 53 years old by Maryland State Police late Thursday, did not survive the crash and was declared deceased at the scene. A State Police official said late Thursday the victim’s name was not being released pending identification of next of kin and other loose ends related to the investigation. Around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the Berlin and Newark Fire departments responded to a reported dwelling fire on Bowden Road in Newark. First-arriving units reported heavy smoke and fire showing from the two-story residence. Firefighters and equipment from the Showell, Ocean Pines and Powellville Fire Departments were brought in to assist and the fire was extinguished and contained to the building of origin. The residence was not occupied at the time and no injuries were reported. However, a total of nine individuals including the owner, Mohammed Nawaz, and his wife and six children along with his father lived in the residence and were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross was brought in and is assisting the family. The cause of the fire is listed as undetermined and the investigation remained open as of late Thursday afternoon.
