UNDERSTANDING FOOD
SUPPLEMENT LABELS
86 APPENDIX
At Nutrigold we feel it's essential to understand
the difference in form and quality of ingredients
alongside product label claims. This will enable
you to choose a biologically active supplement
that is also value for money. Many products still
use poorly absorbed inorganic mineral forms
such as oxides or carbonates (chalk). These
mineral forms are cheaper and high levels can
be packed into each tablet. However, impressive
label claims often hide the fact that these nutrient
forms have very low biological activity (so
are not value for money) and may even cause
unwanted side effects such laxative actions.
Many companies often state the GROSS weight
of a mineral not the active ELEMENTAL weight
(see glossary). This makes for an impressive label
claim when, for example, 1000mg of a mineral
such as calcium is supplied in each capsule
or tablet. However many of these seemingly
impressive (and often cheaper) products do not
state the elemental weight of the mineral, i.e.
the amount of active mineral that is available
for absorption and utilisation within the body.
To make our products as effective as possible
we only use the highest quality, bioactive raw
materials and state the elemental weight of
minerals on our product labels.
Remember the most expensive
nutritional supplement you have ever
taken is the one that didn't work!
