United by water. that is more than just
a slogan at marinemax. it lies at the very
heart of the company, which is celebrating
our 15th anniversary.
While our technical age is just 15 years,
the company's origins actually stretch back
four decades to the days when chairman
and ceo Bill mcGill moved his family to flor-
ida and opened his first boat dealership. fast
forward these 40 years and you see in the growth of marinemax
the realization of a dream: bringing the joy of life on the water to
families all over the United states.
the growth of marinemax is the story of a group of dedicated
business people who united independent boat dealerships into a
publicly traded company (trading as HZo on the new york stock
exchange) that was able to maximize efficiency and best prac-
tices while allowing team members to focus on what is truly most
important: getting families and friends out on the water together.
marinemax is so much more than fiberglass and steel, blue
water and boating adventures. it is parents getting to know their
children better, friends discovering new bonds and great new
places unlocked by the majesty of water. With world-class service,
financing and insurance, educational programs, and Getaways
trips with other boaters, the 15 years marinemax is celebrating
has been an amazing and joyous journey of discovery.
as marinemax has grown into a nationwide powerhouse of
boating know-how, we have brought the transformative power of
time on the water to an ever-increasing, widely diverse universe of
people. We sell vessels that serve the needs of customers whether
their passion is leisure boating, fishing, watersports, luxury yachts
or vacations. marinemax doesn't just deliver boats to customers,
it delivers on the promise of a lifestyle that celebrates what is
truly important--time--with friends, family, nature, even time for
yourself. that is the central theme marinemax has followed for
these past 15 years.
the key to the marinemax story is the way our employees
deliver on that dream. selling a customer a boat is just the start
of a marinemax relationship. We open the door to a unique life-
style--bringing together the ones that you love through a life
on the water. We provide customers with a
thorough in-water orientation of boat opera-
tion as well as ongoing boat safety, mainte-
nance, seminars, and demonstrations for the
entire family. the service extends well after
the sale, too, by organizing

group boating trips to destinations, rendez-
vous gatherings, and on-the-water events for
you to enjoy your boat.
With more than 50 retail locations throughout the United
states, marinemax sells new and used pleasure and recreation-
al boats, fishing boats, and high-performance boats, as well as
related marine products, including engines, trailers, parts, and
accessories. the company also arranges boat financing, insurance,
and extended warranty contracts, provides boat repair and main-
tenance services, and offers boat brokerage services. "
at the end
of the day it is about the people. it is people doing business with
people and making relationships with customers, it is a repeat
and referral business," says chairman/ceo Bill mcGill. "We are all
about the people and we're only as good as our people.
"
our strategy is pretty basic. it's what i developed about 40
years ago, and over the course of those 40 years, which is, basi-
cally, a customer centric strategy. it's trying to remove the hassles
of boating. We've all heard the saying that the two best days are
the day you buy it and the day you sell it. Unfortunately, that has
sort of been the approach that the industry has created as most of
them sell boats. and they treat it like a car: here it is, and you take
care of it in some cases, or we'll take care of it if you bring it back
to us, and there's no one to teach you how to use it and that type
of thing. What we try to do is we put the `ing' in boating.
"it's a pretty basic strategy, but it really fits the lifestyle that
exists today. it's more about family today, and boating is one of
the best family recreations that i know of. if you want to know
your kids, teach them how to ski, fish, scuba dive and navigate.
and if you really want to know your kids as they start growing up,
know their friends, and invite them along to enjoy the pleasures
of boating. We have what families need today, and we support it
to make it a hassle-free experience," mcGill says.
