the color scheme
Basing your design on a color scheme will help narrow your
focus and ease the concern of what works with your decor and
what doesn't. "start with an anchor color. in general, most people
are afraid to use a bold or bright color as their anchor, but it's
those colors that make for a great neutral to your color palette,"
Kathy instructs. a cheerful turquoise is a perfect foundation for an
interesting twist of design on traditional décor. Using a pop of red
provides a striking contrast to the turquoise.
red apples offer texture and can further support the contrast
of red, and the gold touches on chargers, ribbon and chairs give
a regal touch contributing just the right amount of accent. Using
gold or silver as an accent can open the door to mixing in a prized
heirloom to the décor.
the all-important theme
once the color has been established, consider your theme.
formal and frilly, casual cocktail, is this a seated affair or do you
want to encourage mingling? a rule of thumb when creating a
table where guests will actually dine: it's important to keep your
décor either below or above eye level so that they may enjoy one
another's company while feasting. since Kathy G. is known for
sensational design, her cocktail tablescapes are ones to adore.
"even the most intricate designs can be replicated by using a little
imagination and putting your own personality into the look.
"take a white hot look for example. it's a winter wonderland
showstopper where food and fashion compete for the prize."
