fall marks one of the most special seasons for boating in the
northeast. from the spectacular fall foliage to the crisp nights to
the oneofakind tourist sites, here's the rundown on some of
our favorite northern boating adventures.
nestled on a long neck of land along the miles river on mary-
land's eastern shore, the port town of st. michaels is a perfect
yachting destination for fall, as the crowds begin to die down and
you can have your pick among the best offerings of food, lodging
and other activities--something for everyone, says Jennifer Keller,
events coordinator for marinemax maryland. Here, you'll find
a mix of hole-in-the-wall crab shacks and four-star restaurants,
high-end boutiques and mom-and-pop antique stores.
one of the more famous attractions is the inn at Perry cabin.
once a private colonial mansion, the inn has changed and ex-
panded over time into a 41-room luxury hotel and spa that served
as the site for the 2005 film, Wedding Crashers.
another popular resort is the st. michaels Harbour inn, marina
& spa, which is right on the harbor and features a full-service,
52-slip marina, 46 suites and guest rooms, and restaurants.
While you're here, be sure to visit tilghman island, where you
can watch the local watermen dredging for oysters or stop by
crawford's nautical Books, which boasts a collection of "12,000
books of all watery categories." finally, weather permitting,
kayaking is also available and a great way to check out the local
osprey or, if you're lucky, spot a bald eagle.
maryland's state capital, annapolis is a history buff's dream,
with museums and historical sites to rival just about any other
town in the country. and like st. michaels and other northeast
yachting destinations, it makes for a perfect fall getaway. one of
the most famous sites in annapolis is the U.s. naval academy with
its 338-acre campus on chesapeake Bay. a guided walking tour
explores the academy's history, which dates back to 1850.
for some of the best people- and yacht-watching, the narrow
waterway nicknamed "ego alley" is a popular spot for after-din-
ner drinks or dessert or shopping for souvenirs and art.
once the stomping grounds of new york actors, who traveled
here by train and then used steam boats to travel from destination
to destination, lake Hopatcong is new Jersey's largest freshwater
lake. it's particularly popular for fishing, swimming, wakeboard-
ing, waterskiing and parties. larry morgan of marinemax lake
