UL INTERNATIONAL CROWN
2014 RECAP After two years of preparation and build up of anticipation for the first-of-its-kind, team match-play event, eight country teams arrived at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mill, Maryland with one goal: to be “crowned” the best golfing nation in the world. Flags were flown, anthems were sung and the most unique setting of country vs. country in professional golf was unveiled. After three days of pool play, the world was shocked to see the two top-ranked teams from their respective pools facing off in a wildcard playoff Saturday afternoon to decide the final spot for Sunday’s singles matches. The Republic of Korea edged the United States in exciting fashion on the first hole of the sudden-death playoff to advance to the final day. Inbee Park and So Yeon Ryu both made birdies to defeat Team USA after Cristie Kerr birdied and Lexi Thompson made par. After being swept by the Americans on the second day of play Friday, Team Spain had a surging comeback on the weekend, winning all 12 possible points and posting a perfect 6-0 record over the final two days. Team Spain, consisting of Azahara Munoz, Beatriz Recari, Carlota Ciganda and Belen Mozo, played off their fiery competitive spirit and on-course chemistry to finish with a total of 15 points, four points ahead of runner-up Sweden.
