Within the foreshore area is
the Edwin Fox project, where
one of the oldest ships in the
world, a barque built in 1853, is
now being preserved alongside
a small maritime museum. The
ship and the museum are open
every day from 9am to 5pm.
The Edwin Fox has a colourful
150 year history, which includes
carrying convicts to the penal
colonies of Australia; and
transporting French troops to
the battlefields of the Crimean
War. In the 1870s many
immigrants travelled on the
Edwin Fox from Britain to settle
in the raw young colony of New
Zealand.
Also on the foreshore, the Smith
Memorial Museum features
relics from the pioneering days
of last century. It provides a
wealth of information about the
area when it was occupied by a
Maori settlement, as well
