NELSON REGION
THE GEOGRAPHIC CENTRE
of New Zealand, the Nelson
Region is known for its
sunshine, fine beaches, lakes,
mountains and lush native
forests. Add to this the
attraction of fine foods, superb
wines, innovative crafts and
warm hospitality and you can
see why holiday makers flock to
Nelson all year round.
The Nelson region is easily
accessible. From Picton, Nelson
is only 113 kilometres away -- a
one and a half hour drive which
lets you see something of the
beautiful Marlborough Sounds.
Alternatively, you could fly
direct to Nelson on one of
the many flights from the
international airports of
Christchurch, Wellington,
Auckland and most regional
airports.
Once here you can enjoy
activities as diverse as
tramping (hiking), caving,
mountaineering, skiing, horse
trekking, 4WD motorbike
adventures, agricultural tours
and visits to vineyards and
a wildlife refuge. Or you can
take to the air with tandem
skydiving, Water-based
activities include fishing,
sailing, sea kayaking and
whitewater rafting.
The Abel Tasman National Park
and Nelson Lakes National Park
are both a short drive from
Nelson City.
Nelson Lakes is more
mountainous, with tramping,
hunting, skiing and fishing
among the many activities you
can enjoy here.
The Kahurangi National Park
and Richmond Forest Park are
also close to Nelson; the former
has two of New Zealand's best
tramping tracks: the Heaphy
and Wangapeka tracks.
Nelson is a beautiful grape-
growing district compared by
many to the picturesque wine-
making district of Beaujolais in
France.
Stroll around a village of
historic buildings, circa 1880-
1930s and experience Nelson's
heritage. Located 2 minutes
from the city, Founders Park
is a living village with artists
studios and a working railway.
Enjoy established gardens,
playground and picnic areas
or relax and dine al fresco at
the café/bakery. Open every
day from 10am-4.30pm (closed
Christmas Day and Good
Friday).
