Around & About
O
ver the years aircraft ac-
cidents have robbed South
Africa of two internationally
known and highly respected
aviation photographers, namely Her-
man Potgieter and Frans Dely.
Justin de Reuck is a Cape Town
photographer who is fast becoming a
second "Frans Dely" in the world of
aviation photography. Global Aviator
chats to him about what makes his
photographic world tick and to get
some very interesting, useful tips.
He grew up in the Cape, and has
lived there all his life. He attended a
technical high school as he initially
wanted a good technical background
on everything from mechanics to
engineering and matriculated from
Boston House College in 1989.
He then joined SAAF in 1990 as
a national serviceman and there
started studying photography through
correspondence courses. After
the military he became a full time
photographer, earning peanuts and
spending many hours in darkrooms.
"I decided I had better get a
proper education and went off to
study electrical engineering" he said.
Today, even though he works as a full
time photographer, he is still part of
a family business that does industrial
and commercial electrical contracting
and data network installations.

Justin is also a partner in Shutterbugs
School of Photography, where
he lectures once or twice a week
on anything from beginner to
advanced photographic techniques.
He started shooting aviation
for an income around 2006,
